About Daughters of Bilitis:

The Daughters of Bilitis (DOB) was founded in 1955 in San Francisco as an organization for lesbians to meet other lesbians in a respectable setting (i.e. not bars). The Daughters of Bilitis worked for acceptance of lesbians as respectable citizens of society.The organization was named for a book of poetry by Pierre Louys, Songs of Bilitis, which included poems about love between women.
